Malvar Senior High School has every reason to celebrate after its graduates won the Best Student Short Film in the recently concluded Cebu International Film Festival (Cebu IFF), held last January 7, 2021.
Written and directed by Mr. Mark Angelo Roma together with his team of graduates from Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (Batch 2019-2020), the short film entitled Persday speaks about social anxiety and search for identity of teenagers as they go through their first day of classes.
“The idea was astoundingly portrayed through symbolism,” said Mark Roma, the film director, in an interview.
Before Cebu IFF, the film also won Best Picture, Best Editing and Best Sound Design in the 2nd Gawad Heneral Film Festival (GHFF) 2020 of Malvar Senior High School.
The film made its official entry to Cebu IFF on July 4, 2020.
“Good thing po na natapos na ‘yung pelikula around March [as our official entry for the school-based film fest] pero we had to re-edit and make sure the sound and music is on point. Dahil po sa pandemic, we had to only talk online tapos ‘yung pasahan din po ng information and data ay online din,” said Mark. “Mahirap po ‘yung setup ng online pero fortunately ay naging fruitful naman po ang labors.”
The victory of Persday in the Cebu IFF raises hopes for the new era of filmmaking at Malvar Senior High School.
The film also made it to the UNESCO Club of University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) 6th Open Air Screening last Dec. 18, 2020.
