This year’s Brigada Eskwela, which ran from May 20-25, 2019, focused on the theme “Matatag na Bayan para sa Maunlad na Paaralan” to reflect how DepEd recognizes the importance of the community in making schools the best place for learners to acquire the values and competencies they need to contribute to nation-building.
Senior High School in Malvar is one with the department in implementing this kind of activity since it keeps itself true to its purpose of promoting not only quality education among its primary stakeholders—the students—but also of securing a conducive and safe learning environment for them.
Even before the actual launching of the Brigada Eskwela, faculty members and other school personnel were called on for a meeting to discuss how the school would carry out this back-to-school preparation drive. To avoid clutter at work, the school head, Dr. Jhomar C. Sor, enumerated the schedule for students who would participate. Monday is for Grade 11 HUMSS; Tuesday for Grade 11 STEM and ABM; Wednesday for Grade 11 TVL; Thursday for Grade 12 HUMSS; and Friday for Grade 12 STEM, ABM, and TVL students. They are no longer expected to go to school on Saturday. Aside from schedule of students, the principal also identified team leaders who would guide faculty members to their respective work areas including the school ground, façade and surrounding outside, Building A, and Building B.
DAY 1
As soon as participants like parents, students, faculty members and other school personnel arrive in school, they were asked to register and were led to the ground for the opening program. By 8:00 am, the program started and it signaled the kickoff of SHS in Malvar’s Brigada Eskwela implementation which was headed by its coordinator, Ms. Joie Miranda. During the program, everyone was reminded of the relevance and objectives of conducting such activity. When the program was over, everyone was advised to go to their respective areas in the school ground for cleanup.
DAY 2
In the second day, participants spent two hours cleaning the school ground before they were asked to proceed to the second floor of Buildings A and B. Teacher advisers primarily took charge of their respective classroom dusting off and wiping ceilings, windows, and wall fans; mopping and sweeping the floor; wiping, and arranging chairs; bringing the damaged chairs to the MRF area; and cleaning the corridor and stairs
DAY 3
During the third day, participants spent a few hours trimming grass near the school façade. After that, teacher-advisers and those teachers who did not have any assigned task in the school ground were told to clean the rooms in the third floor of both buildings. They were asked to unscrew the light green armchairs which would be replaced by other sets of armchairs. When the old chairs were collected, they began cleaning the rooms.
DAY 4
Because the school would be used as the venue for a district-wide seminar the following week, teacher-advisers of rooms in the second and third floors as well as those assigned in the fourth floor of Building A were asked to secure the areas by keeping them spick and span. They were also told to secure the assigned number of chairs per classroom.
DAY 5
For the fifth day, only minor polishing was done in Building A. On the other hand, a major cleanup was done in the fourth floor of the other building since many of the laboratories were there. Dusting off, floor polishing and cleaning of lab instruments and facilities including cleaning of corridors and stairs were done.
DAY 6
For the last day, faculty members went to school to secure that everything has been taken cared of. They were also called for to prepare for the Continuing Professional Development Seminar which would be conducted the following week at SHS in Malvar.
