SHS in Malvar Joins the Nationwide Quake Drill

Students and faculty members of SHS in Malvar actively participated the 2nd Quarterly Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill held on Thursday, June 20, 2019. This is in preparation for emergency and adverse earthquake situations in the province.

In relation to DepEd 4-A-03 RM No. -19-339 entitled "2nd Quarterly Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill", all public schools are hereby advised to conduct the activity at 2:00 o'clock this afternoon. The purpose of the activity was to gauge students’ awareness and alertness during evacuation procedures.

Prior to this, Mr. Dennis Castillo, the Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) Coordinator initiated an orientation program last Wednesday, June 19, where he shows what to do in case an earthquake occur in the school. With the support of the Urban Fire Officer (UFO) team, the orientation demonstrates the proper "Duck, Cover, and Hold" in front of all the students of SHS in Malvar. The emergency route, posted in every classroom was also discussed during the morning program.

Morning planning orientation was spearheaded by Mr. Castillo to assess the response and preparedness of the school and the community in the event disasters and emergencies. A meeting at 7o’ clock in the morning was held to brief faculty members about what is expected of everyone during the conduct of the drill. He stressed that should an actual earthquake occur, the life of the students depend on the teacher who was with them during the tremor.

A siren signaled the start of the drill at 2:00 PM where the students performed the "Duck, Cover and Hold" stance.

Teachers and students from Buildings A and B could be seen walking downstairs with their arms covering their heads after the bell stopped ringing. The aim was to reach the evacuation area as quickly as possible.

The area intended for everyone to gather after evacuation was the oval outside the school. When students reached this area, assigned teachers did a head count to make sure no one was left behind. The number of participants including teachers, personnel, students, and other stakeholders were tallied and submitted immediately to the district DRR coordinator.
