SHS in Malvar: Life inside the Evacuation Center amid Taal Volcano's Unrest

As of Jan. 21, 2020, the evacuation center is composed of 191 families with 633 individuals; 323 are men and 310 are women; 43 evacuees are senior citizens and 83 are children.


Senior High School in Malvar Evacuation Center (SHSM EC) is spearheaded by Dr. Jhomar C. Sor, Principal II of SHS in Malvar, as the chairperson with Mr. Dennis Castillo, DRRM Coordinator and Mr. Perry P. Taborda as the focal person. The relief goods and supply management is headed by Dr. Apolonio A. Villanueva; Security and Order by Mr. Anthony O. Buno; Physical and Waste Management by Mr. Jay Aala and Food by Mr. Ronald Reano.


On January 17, a medical team posts a station to assist evacuees with medical attention while receiving of in-kind donations and incoming evacuees were assisted by school personnel and volunteers in the reception area of the EC. The reception monitors number of of incoming evacuees and the type of goods received by the "Donation and Relief Goods Supplies" Team.



The school's H.E. Laboratory serves as the kitchen for the evacuees to prepare their foods. Seen in the pictures below are the volunteers, evacuees and school personnel working together.



While the school clinic is equipped with medical supplies to cater the needs of the evacuees.


Senior High School has faucets and washing area for the evacuees. This is where the evacuees wash their clothes and utensils.


Kids spend time reading and writing in classes organized by the school teachers and volunteers. Kids are divided in 3 classes; Class 1 consists of kids in grades 1-2, Class 2 for kids in grades 3-4 and Class 3 consists of grades 5-6.


Foods were cooked and distributed to household coordinators for their respective stations. A tent is placed in the center-most part of the evacuation area. This is where the meetings and distribution takes place. Each rooms have coordinators for him/her to receive the meal in this area and then distribute it to his/her respective members. However, this arrangement varies depending on the situation; for example when private/government organizations sponsor a particular meal of the day.



A specific room where provided to be the "Donation and Relief Goods Supplies Room". This is where the relief goods are distributed for the evacuees.


Controls are placed in the evacuation center. Identification cards were pinned in each evacuees with control numbers and identification cards for household coordinators; gates were also secured by a security personnel; volunteers and staff wear I.D. and signage are posted in particular areas of concern.



It is also seen that rooms in the evacuation area were labeled for its respective household numbers; there is also a specific room for the evacuees to select and pick clothes that are donated by government and private donors. An area is also given for the evacuees to hang their clothes after washing.
