YES-O launches Kalikasan Camp 2018

Highlighting the importance of proper waste disposal as manifested in this year's theme, "Beat Pollution, Practice Waste Segregation," the Youth for Environment in School Organization (YES-O) of Senior High School in Malvar launched its very first school level Kalikasan Camp, Nov. 29.

This whole day activity primarily raised awareness on the 3R's (Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle) among the participants through several competitions prepared by the organizers in cooperation with other school clubs and their moderators and representatives such as TugSayAwit, Environmental Stations, Tent-making, Aras Karas, and G. at Bb. Kalikasan. The school club partners included the Supreme Student Government headed by Ms. Cherrilyn Mercado and Mr. Dennis Castillo, CREATES (Arts and Craft Club) represented by Mrs. Leidelen Telegrapo and its Club Officers, Digital Club handled by Mr. Ian Karlo Perilla, and Book Lovers Club supervised by Mrs. Marianne Caraig and Ms. Princess Dianne Cuasay.

The program began after the flag raising ceremony. Participants were pre-grouped into six which were identified through the colors blue, violet, green, yellow, red, and pink. Each of them had to go through the environmental stations in which they were taught a skill they had to demonstrate themselves or accomplish certain tasks. Through the criteria set by the club moderators and representatives, the groups were graded and were given corresponding points. Their accumulated points in all of the competitions determined their ranking.

The main event in the program was the pageant. It was where 12 candidates (6 males and 5 females) vied for the crown and the title.

Winners were announced after the activities. Pink team won in the Aras Karas contest. Yellow team got the first place both in TugSayAwit and Tent-making competitions. For the G. and Bb. Kalikasan, the following candidates emerged victorious: Wayne Francisco (from Green Team) and Emilou Fyne Antiporda (from Violet Team) as 2nd runners-up, Eljin Padora (from Blue Team) and Patricia Carandang (from Blue Team) as 1st runners-up, and Mark Jasper Catli (from Blue Team) as G. Kalikasan 2018, and Elaysa Sundoy (from Blue Team) as Bb. Kalikasan 2018. Announcement of overall ranking was done after the flag ceremony on December 3. Yellow Team was declared as the overall champion.

The proceeds from the said event will be used for the construction of the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and Tree Planting Activity to be held on February 2019 in cooperation with the Local Government of Malvar.
